Delroy Chuck

Delroy Chuck Hawmin, QC, ( born December 2, 1950 in Christiana, Manchester ) is a Jamaican lawyer and politician of the Jamaica Labour Party ( JLP ). He was from July 2011 to January 2012 the Minister of Justice of Jamaica.

Life and career

Chuck grew up in Clarendon and attended from 1955 to 1962, the Ritchies Primary School. Then he attended until 1969, the Kingston College. He then studied at the University of the West Indies ( UWI ) and obtained in 1972 a Bachelor's degree in mathematics. He continued his studies at St. Catherine's College, University of Oxford and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Law and Civil Law from. Since 1982 he has worked in Jamaica as a lawyer, later he also taught as a Senior Lecturer of Law at the UWI. On 18 August 2011 he was appointed Queen's Counsel.

Chuck is married and father of four children.

Policy

Since 1995, Chuck operated politically. In 1997 he was in the constituency of North Eastern St. Andrew for the JLP first elected to the House of Representatives and was able to maintain its mandate in the elections in 2002 and 2007. After the electoral victory of the JLP in September 2007, he was first Speaker of the House ( Speaker of the House). As in a cabinet reshuffle in mid-2011 Dorothy Lightbourne had to vacate her post as Minister of Justice and Attorney General and the two powers were separated, Chuck took over the post of Minister of Justice. His swearing-in ceremony took place on 5 July 2011. After the electoral defeat of the JLP on December 29, 2011, he resigned from 6 January 2012 from the ministerial office, and has since January 19, 2012 Opposition Spokesperson for Justice, National Security and electoral matters.
