Parish

Christiana is a small city in the interior of Jamaica. The city is located in Middlesex County and is the second largest city in the Parish of Manchester. In 2010 Christiana had a population of 8,567 people

Geography

Christiana is a place in the May Day Mountains and is on average 825 meters above the sea level. The place is surrounded by rolling hills which alternates with extremely fertile valleys, which is cultivated for the most part and is used for agriculture.

The nearest settlement is the Sedburgh about 3 kilometers south of lying and its neighboring Clandon. To the north in about four kilometers away are the little villages dump, Hanson, and the approximately equidistant, but further east Moravia. Christiana is about 14 kilometers from Mandeviele, the capital and largest settlement of the Manchester Parish.

History

Christiana was first settled by German farmers between the 18th and 19th centuries. In this region, Christian missionaries of the Moravian Church were particularly active. In the city there are mainly churches of this faith community. In the 19th century Christiana was popular in the European nobility and moneyed aristocracy as a holiday resort. Today, especially the inhabitants of Kingston use the place as a tourist destination, known for its moderate temperatures.

In 2007 Hurricane Dean moved through the city. He flooded most of the roads and uprooted trees.

Churches

In addition to the dominant religious community of the Moravian Church, here are found also other churches and monasteries of the Sacred Heart Church and a community of faith of the Bobo Ashanti and the United Church of Christ.

Nature

The nearby Gourie Cave is one of about 100 caves in the Parish and with 3.505m the longest known cave system in Jamaica.
