Delvenau at Witzeeze

The Delvenau ( today: Stecknitz in cards often: Stecknitz ( Delvenau ) ) is a 50 km long river in the Duchy of Lauenburg, in Schleswig- Holstein. It rises at Büchenberg and flows at Lauenburg / Elbe to the Elbe. From Niebuhr lock until shortly before Lauenburg the watercourse forms the border of Mecklenburg -Vorpommern.

The name dates back to the Middle Low German word for delf ditch and was reinterpreted later.

Stecknitz

The Delvenau was already regulated as Stecknitz in the Middle Ages and related to the opening into the Travelodge Stecknitz in conjunction. Since the renewed expansion of the late 19th century is called the 62- km-long waterway between the Elbe and Trave Elbe -Lübeck Canal. During their headwaters was cut off from the channel construction, the lower reaches of the Delvenau stayed with two of the old locks, the lock and the Dückerstieg Palmschleuse obtained.

As has been the construction of the Stecknitzkanals the name " Stecknitz " for the flowing southward Delvenau naturalized, use official maps, the term " Stecknitz ( Delvenau ) ".

Historic boundary

Conservation

The Mecklenburg shore area is legally protected since 1990 occurred designation as a nature reserve Stecknitz Delvenau. The objective is the protection and conservation of lowland meandering creek and the adjacent wet and moist meadows and herbaceous communities.
