Substantive Profile

With the exception that the Communist Party of the Turkmen Soviet Socialist Republic was renamed the Democratic Party of Turkmenistan, it came within the party to no democratization.

The leader of the Democratic Party remained even after the independence of Turkmenistan, the political leadership of the party, but are currently aligned nationalist and not, as earlier, communist. The party is content merely as President of the party and can therefore be classified as authoritarian despite the name.

History

The Democratic Party of Turkmenistan emerged from the Communist Party of the Turkmen Soviet Socialist Republic. After the failed August 1991 coup in Moscow Saparmurat Niyazov replaced the KP in the now independent Turkmenistan and established in its place and under his leadership the Democratic Party. Its chairman was Niyazov.

Since early 2006, it is the only party allowed in Turkmenistan, the only (apparent) opposition party Peasant Justice Party was banned. Turkmenistan became the party state. Although the new Turkmen Constitution of September 2008 party -ups allowed, the DP so far remained the only political party.
