Democratic Party (Slovakia)

The demokratická strana ( German Democratic Party), abbreviated DS, was a political party in Slovakia in the years 1944-1948 and 1989-2006.

Period 1944-1948

The DS was born in September 1944 during the Slovak National Uprising of several groups of resistance, including from numerous Slovak supporters of the former strong agricultural party. It brought together many democratically oriented forces. In 1945 she became a member of the National Front, and as such was allowed to participate in the parliamentary elections in Czechoslovakia in 1946.

Shortly before the elections closed her mostly Protestant -oriented leadership from an agreement with the representatives of the Slovak Catholics. This meant that the DS in the elections in the Slovak part of the state with 62 percent of twice as many votes obtained as the Slovak Communists of the KSS and became the victor in Slovakia (in total but they got only 14 percent of the vote ) and participated with four ministers in the government Klement Gottwald I.

Therefore, in the following time they came into conflict with the KSS. In the fall of 1947, she was accused of an attempt to overthrow, in February 1948 began their government members as ministers back the government Klement Gottwald II. After the communist takeover, it was largely liquidated. Most members of the party chose emigration, was then on 24 March 1948, the small residual which Strana slovenskej obrody, a party that lasted as a so-called block party until November 1989.

Among the leaders of the party included, among other things, Jozef Lettrich, Ján Ursíny, Jozef Kempny and Miloš Bugár. The party published the newspaper invited.

Founded after 1989

In December 1989, the DS was re-established and continued the traditions of the period 1944-1948. She has participated in several Slovak governments. There have been several spin-offs and mergers, as well as to some renaming. 2006 saw the last merger, the DS came in, the new party is called Slovenská demokratická a kresťanská Unia - demokratická strana.
