Demographics of Switzerland

The permanent resident population of Switzerland on December 31, 2012 consisted of 8.039 million inhabitants. Compared to the previous year, this represents a population increase of about 81'200 persons ( 1.1 % 2008: 1.4 %). This leveled the population growth compared to the record year of 2008 ( with a population growth rate as the last time in the 1960s ) again slightly. In addition, around 48,000 people live in Switzerland with a short-term permit of less than one year and around 40'300 people in the asylum process. In Europe, Switzerland is one of the countries with the highest population increase. The permanent resident population took 1991-2009 to humans, approximately 1 million (1991: 6.8 million).

The increase is the result of 78'200 (2008: 76'700 ) 62'600 births and (2008: 61'200 ) deaths and a net migration of 24,800 persons or 40'800 status changes of short - term residents in the long term. The net migration comes to a total 65'600 (2008: 98'200 ) persons, birth surplus 15,600 (2008: 15,500 ) people.

Around 1.711 million (2008: 1.67 million ) inhabitants, ie around 22% of the permanent population (2008: 21.7%) were foreign nationals, so this share represents one of the highest in a European country. In addition, 2008, around 205'100 foreign cross-border workers in Switzerland worked. Reasons for the high proportion of foreign citizens in addition to the economic structure and the small law also restrained naturalization. In 2007, 43,900 people acquired Swiss citizenship.

In 2009, approximately 41'500 marriages were contracted, founded 900 registered partnerships and divorces pronounced 19'300.

Forecast

The most important results of the three new by the Federal Statistical Office ( FSO) elaborated scenarios for population growth in Switzerland and the development of the workforce is a striking aging of the resident population 2005-2035 and a shrinking workforce from 2015.

Since 1984, the Federal Statistical Office publishes on behalf of the Federal Council and in collaboration with the Planning Staff of the Federal periodically population scenarios for Switzerland. The population scenarios serve as a basis for forecasts of the Covenant, in particular for the economic scenarios.

Two alternative scenarios deal more detail with the aging of the population. One is based on a hypothesis election in which the ratio of the number of at least 65 years of age most increases the number of people of working age ( 20-64 ). Finally, can be examined on the basis of the scenario 9 variants "Trend".
