History

Development of basketball in Den Helder

The history of basketball in Den Helder begins in 1948, when the sports club HAV Den Helder called a basketball department to life. In the late 1970s decided the members of the basketball team to isolate herself from the tribe club and form a separate club.

BV Noordkop

This happened shortly after the rise of the team in the Eredivisie, the top league in the Netherlands. The club was from the first season, 1981/82 in this league independently under the name Basketbal Vereniging Noordkop (short: BV Nordkoop ) active. The first seasons designed to be very difficult, it was always fighting against relegation, which was always prevented. In the 1984/85 season the team took part in the Korać Cup, failed there in the second round.

For the 1985/86 season the former coach of the Netherlands national basketball team was engaged tone boat whose job paid off quickly. Den Helder was second in the regular season and reached the play-offs the final of the championship, which was lost to Nashua Den Bosch. In the following year led the team boat again into the play-off final, which was again lost to Den Bosch.

The Golden Years

The 1988/89 season was finished in second place. A third time the BV reached the championship final, again the series champion, Den Bosch was the opponent. In contrast to the two previously lost finals series managed Den Helder once in Den Bosch to win, so that the team won the first championship for the club. Now Noordkop belonged to the Dutch league, won the 1990, 1991 and 1992 three more championships in a row. In addition, the Dutch Basketball Cup was won in 1992. After these five tracks sound boat left the club towards Amsterdam to ABC.

In the first two years after the departure of the boat team failed each in the semifinals. With the coaches Meindert van Veen (1995) and Maarten Tromp (1998 ), the championships won five and six.

European Cup

Due to the success in the National League, the club during this time many participations in European competitions before:

  • European Champion Clubs' Cup: 1990 - Top 8, 1991 - first round, 1992 - Top 16, 1993 - first round, 1996 - first round
  • European Cup Winners' Cup: 1998 - 1st Round, 1994 - Round 3, 1995 - 1st Round, 1999 - Group Stage
  • Korać Cup: 1989 - Top 16 1997 - 1st Round, 1998 - group stage 2000 - 1st Round

Decline

After the turn of the millennium worsened the performance of the team and the BV only occupied seats in mid-table. For the 2005/06 season, the club withdrew because of financial difficulties of the first division, announced in 2007 under the name Den Helder steals back. But the club had to withdraw again and disappeared for the time being in lower leagues.

Den Helder Kings

A new attempt is tried under the name Den Helder Kings, which again play since the 2012/13 season in the top basketball league and immediately reached a good sixth place, failed due to the gas Terra Flames in the play-offs in the quarter-finals.

Hall

The club plays its home games from the Sporthal Sports Center.
