Denis Dodart

Denis Dodart (* 1634 in Paris, † November 5, 1707 ) was a French physician and botanist.

Life and work

Denis Dodart is the son of his father's eponymous Dodart Denis and his wife Marie Dubois. He studied medicine, earned his degree at the April 1, 1658 and received his PhD on October 13, 1660 Doctor of Medicine. In 1666 he became a professor at the Medical Faculty of the University of Paris. He was a doctor of Anne Geneviève de Bourbon- Condé, Duchess of Longueville and of Anna Maria Martinozzi of the Prince of Conti widow. Dodart eventually became one of the consulting physicians of King Louis XIV in 1673 he became a member of the Paris Academy of Sciences.

1676 appeared Mémoires pour servir à font l' histoire des plantes acted in Dodard as editor. He coordinated the contributions of this Samuel Cottereau du Clos (1598-1685), Pierre Borel, Claude Perrault, Edmé Mariotte, Claude Bourdelin II ( † 1711), Nicolas Marchant († 1678) and wrote this itself. The work is illustrated with 39 plates by Nicolas Robert Plant.

Dodart died on November 5, 1707 and was buried in the cemetery of Saint Germain l' Auxerrois Church in Paris. His son Claude Jean -Baptiste Dodart ( 1664-1730 ).

Joseph Pitton de Tournefort named in his honor the genus Dodartia the plant family of jugglers flower plants ( Phrymaceae ). Linnaeus later took the name
