Dennis Joseph Dougherty

Denis Joseph Cardinal Dougherty ( born August 16, 1865 in Honesville, USA, † May 31, 1951 in Philadelphia ) was Archbishop of Philadelphia.

Life

Denis Joseph Dougherty studied in Montréal, Overbrook and Rome compartments Catholic theology and philosophy. He completed his studies with a doctorate in theology and received on 31 May 1890, the sacrament of Holy Orders. Then he performed the duties of the officers of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia tential and taught at the Seminary of Overbrook the subjects English, Latin, history and the Catholic religion. On 12 June 1903 he received the appointment as Bishop of Nueva Segovia in the Philippines. The bishop ordained Denis Joseph Dougherty two days later by Cardinal Francesco Satolli. Co-consecrators were Curia Archbishop Pietro Gasparri and Emeritus Bishop of Guastalla, Archbishop Enrico Grazioli.

Pope Pius X appointed Denis Joseph Dougherty on June 21, 1908 Bishop of Jaro in the Philippines. Pope Benedict XV. summoned him back to his American home and appointed him on December 9, 1915 Bishop of Buffalo. Already on May 1, 1918 Dougherty was appointed Archbishop of Philadelphia, and introduced into the office on 10 July of the same year.

On March 7, 1921, Denis Joseph Dougherty as part of the Solemn Consistory by Pope Benedict XV. taken as a cardinal priest with the titular church of Santi Nereo ed Achilleo in the College of Cardinals. Denis Joseph Cardinal Dougherty participated in the conclave of 1939. He died on 31 May 1951 in Philadelphia and was buried in the local cathedral.
