Since 1992, the various national quality seal resulted in Europe under EU law in the Protected designation -of -origin label ( PDO seal), but are often more used alone or in parallel because of their higher awareness level. The unchanged since 1963 existing DOC criteria were adjusted in 1992 to also comply with the regulations of the PDO label.

The legislation includes, in addition to the allowable yield per hectare among other things, the approved production areas and the permitted grape varieties. Wines with DOC or DOCG seal must not be packed in packages with a volume that is greater than five liters.
