The miller and his child is an Austrian silent film from 1911. He is the oldest completely preserved Austrian film.

Action

A poor miller's son wants to marry a rich miller's daughter, but their widowed father is mean and stingy, and harassed the couple rascally. Dead bird and Friedhofsspuk heralding the approaching end of the miller and his innocent daughter.

Background

It is based, as well as the German film was also listed in 1911, to the late romantic shower drama by Ernst Raupach, which in 1830 premiered at the Burgtheater in Vienna with great success, and thereafter until the 20th century every year to Allerheiligenzeit in many theaters.

The length of the film was according to the manufacturer about 600 m of the flammable 35mm nitro film. The drama was filmed in two acts in 19 settings and achieved at a playback level of 16 frames per second, as was customary in the early silent film, a length of 21 minutes and 50 seconds. Although the Austrian Film Archive, which secures the film, less has almost 150 feet of film, the plot of the film is complete, and only the ends of the individual film rolls are too abrupt, and the end of the 19th shot is missing.

For the scenic and technical management of the subsequent animal film and thriller director Joseph Delmont was responsible, among other things, the camera manually operated with the crank.

The film had on 21 October 1911 in a Viennese theatrical release.
