Derby Canal

The Derby Canal was a 14 miles ( 23 km) long canal in the English county of Derbyshire. He joined the city of Derby with the River Trent and there parallel built - Trent and Mersey Canal in the south and to the Erewash Canal in the north. North of Derby, he had a branch channel to Little Eaton, where as a feeder at the same time built 5 km long horse-drawn tram Derby Canal Railway joined.

Was built the canal from 1793 to 1796. His most ambitious building was the aqueduct over the River Derwent south of Derby, the world's first not built of stone, but in cast iron canal bridge. 1802, 1812 and 1930 showed there vulnerabilities that have been fixed in each case with thick wooden beams. The Derby Canal had nine locks between Erewash Canal and the Trent and Mersey Canal, a staircase of three locks of this down to the Trent, a staircase of four locks in the branch channel to Little Eaton and a lock in the connection of the upper Derwent. The height profile had a peak area north of Derby and one between the aqueduct and the south end.

1817, the southern alignment was cut after the operator of the Trent and Mersey canal, which had previously sought to prevent the construction of the Derby Canal, was depressed by excessive tolls to use them. Middle of the 19th century drove the competition of several railway companies of the channel region in the bankruptcy; Derby channel could hold. 1908, the branch channel to Little Eaton was abandoned, as well as the horse-drawn tram there. Not until 1964 that ended the canal company with official permission and the operation of the remaining channel.

Several bridges and remains of some gates are still preserved. The aqueduct was demolished in 1971. In 1994, the Derby and Sandiacre Canal Society was founded, which has since been seeking to restoration of the legacies.
