Derby Silk Mill

The Derby Industrial Museum is a British museum the history of the industry in Derby, England. The museum is housed in the historical building of a former silk mill. Between 1717 and 1721 George built Sorocold spinning for the Lombe brothers on the banks of the River Derwent. The textile mill was the first of its kind in the UK, in the John Lombe spied in Italy making a strong ( twisted ) warp was implemented industrially. The spinning wheels were powered by a waterwheel unterschlächtigem.

The spinning wheels of the factory were the key innovation of the factory. Through the exclusive drive through water power, the size of the factory and for that time large numbers of employees ( depending on contemporary sources 200 to 400 people ), and the sequence of the complete production process from raw silk to the final product, this silk mill is considered the first industrially -driven silk production in UK.

The municipal museum was temporarily closed for financial reasons on April 3, 2011.
