Warp (weaving)

The warp threads (even chain list, Elevator, ancient shipyard called ) are the threads that are spanned in weaving in a loom in the longitudinal direction. In the finished fabric they are parallel to the selvage, while the weft threads run across it.

Warps in the preparation of the actual weaving process either

  • Sheared and then reared up, that is, on the so-called warp beam, a roll in the loom, wound
  • Or warped, settled and then summarized list several games on a warp beam.

Each individual warp thread must be performed by a strand and through the reed ( reed ) before it can be connected to the so-called cloth beam of the loom. Grows during weaving by the entry of the weft threads at right angles to the warp threads, the fabric, which is wound on the drum-shaped cloth beam.

The way how the warp threads are arranged through the strands on different shafts determines the weave of the fabric. They are raised or lowered, in order to form the shed in different ways. One speaks of a Ketthebung when the warp on the right (upper) side goods over the weft thread, or from Kettsenkung if it is lower.

Warp threads are exposed through the shedding higher mechanical loads than weft threads, so they are additionally treated with sizing to prevent thread breakage and severe abrasion. In general, the warp is thinner than the weft yarn.

The use of colored warp and / or weft threads allow colored patterns, then one speaks of colored fabrics.

When making up textiles goods usually items will be cut from the fabric so that its longer side to the course of the chain follows.
