Derek Bourgeois

Derek Bourgeois ( b. 1941 in Kingston upon Thames ) is a contemporary English composer.

He graduated from the University of Cambridge, United Kingdom of Great Britain with a great degree. He then studied at the Royal College of Music with Herbert Howells and composition with Sir Adrian Boult conducting.

He has published over 40 symphonies, fourteen concerts, various other major orchestral works, seven works for chorus and orchestra, two operas and a musical. He is also dedicated to the amateur music nature within the meaning of Paul Hindemith and composed 12 major works for brass band and 6 symphonies for band.

From 1970 to 1984 he worked at Bristol University as a lecturer. In 1984 he became musical director of the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain. He also conducted the Sun Life Brass band from 1980 until 1983. In 1988 he founded the National Youth Chamber Orchestra of Great Britain. 1990 he was appointed Artistic Director of the Bristol Philharmonic Orchestra. He was musical director of St Paul 's Girls ' School in London in 1993. In July 2002 he moved to Arta in Mallorca, where he worked for some time as a composer, today he lives in Poughkeepsie, USA.
