Derinkuyu

Derinkuyu ( Turkish for deep well ), is a small town in Turkey with about 10,000 inhabitants in the province of Nevsehir. The corresponding district has an area of 445 km ² and a little under 22,000 inhabitants. The place is located in Cappadocia and is known for its large former subterranean city with many floors. As early as the 4th century BC, the town was mentioned, a continuous settlement is evidenced by the discovery of coins, covering the period from the Roman Iron Age to the Seljuks.

In the 29 km south of the provincial capital Nevsehir situated town is located 100 meters south of the entrance of the underground city a featured Armenian basilica dating from the year 1858. The massive three-nave structure is surrounded by a wall and has on the north side of a free-standing bell tower. In the 20th century the building was taken over by Greek Christians, after their expulsion, it was used as a mill and warehouse, today there is a small museum housed.
