Dermatophyte

As dermatophytes ( from Ancient Greek τὸ δέρμα, to derma " skin " and τὸ φυτόν, to phyton " the plant" ) are filamentous fungi ( Hyphomycetes ) denotes that trigger a specific fungal infection of the skin, dermatophytosis. Unlike other skin fungi, dermatophytes of carbohydrates and keratin nourish. You can unlock keratin by the enzyme keratinase.

Classification and features

Currently, 38 species are known in humans and in animals pathogenic dermatophytes. They belong to three genera within the family Moniliaceae or Arthrodermataceae:

  • Microsporum
  • Trichophyton
  • Epidermophyton (eg E. floccosum )
