Dermcidin DCD -1L, which is generated in the welding of a Dermcidin precursor by proteolytic cleavage, is distributed with the sweat on the skin surface, remains in the acid mantle of the skin stable and has amphiphilic properties. There is a broad spectrum antibiotic and works in a wide pH range against many known pathogens such as E. coli (Escherichia coli), the yeast Candida albicans and staphylococci and other Gram- negative or Gram- positive bacteria. In the interaction with bacterial membranes DCD -1L form oligomeric complexes that are stabilized by zinc ions.
