Derodontidae

Laricobius erich soni

Derodontoidea is the only superfamily of partial order Derodontiformia within the beetle suborder Polyphaga.

Features

The presumed autapomorphy that is different from the closely related partial order Bostrichiformia the group of more flattened head with protruding ( prognathic ) mouthparts of the larvae. The types of Bostrichiformia the head is spherical and the mouthparts directed downward ( hypognath ).

Dissemination and lifestyle

The button beetle ( Derodontidae ) are Holarctic, and widespread in the south adjacent warm areas, the Nosodendridae are just as the Jacobsoniidae spread worldwide, but the latter occur mainly in the warm regions of the world, and in particular on numerous islands.

Taxonomy and systematics

The three families that are attributed to this group were previously counted in the partial order Bostrichiformia. Their monophyly is however better justified without these families, which is why the establishment of a separate partial order appears to be justified. The three families were originally attributed to very different, not closely related taxa. Ultimately, however, their present summary and thus the presumed monophyly remains uncertain.

The following families are attributed to the group:

  • Button beetle ( Derodontidae ) LeConte, 1861
  • Sap beetles ( Nosodendridae ) Erichson, 1846
  • Jacobsoniidae Heller, 1926
