Des Moines is a city in Union County in the U.S. state of New Mexico in the United States with 177 inhabitants (as of 2000).

Geography

The place is in the northwest of the county in the northeast corner of New Mexico, is in the north about 10 miles from Colorado to the east about 30 km away from Oklahoma and has a total area of 2.8 km ² without significant water surface.

Demographic data

According to the census of 2000, there were 177 people in 72 households, and 49 families. The population density was 62.6 inhabitants per km ². The racial the population was composed of 79.66 % White, 1.13 % Native American, 15.82% from other races.

Of the 72 households out of which 36.10 % have children under the age of 18 living with them. 52.80 % were married couples living together, 8.30% had a female householder with no husband, and 30.60 % were non-families, 29.20 % of all households are made and 12.50% had someone living alone at the age of 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.46 and the average family size was 3.00.

In relation to the entire town the population was spread out with 30.50 % under the age of 18, 5.60 % from 18 to 24, 27.10% from 25 to 44 years, 23.70 % between 45 and 64 years and 13.00% were 65 years old or older. The average age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 78.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 95.2 men statistically.

The median income for a household was $ 27,321, and the median income for a family was $ 40,833. Males had a median income of $ 21,042, women $ 33,750. The per capita income was $ 16,255. 25.60 % of families and 31.60 % of the population were below the poverty line.
