Deseado River

The Río Deseado in Ría Deseada

The Río Deseado is a river in the Argentine province of Santa Cruz.

The river represents an extension of the Río Fénix dar. originally ran the Río Fénix, which rises north of Lake Buenos Aires in the Andes, in a wide arc to the southeast until it close to the point where now stands the city of Perito Moreno, sharp turned off to the west and resulted in the Lago Buenos Aires. To make the boundary between Chile and Argentina for Argentina advantageous ( as a criterion for the demarcation was, inter alia, the watershed between the Pacific and Atlantic), prompted Francisco P. Moreno 1898, the integration of the Río Fénix in the river system of the Río Deseado through the construction of a canal. This flows the Río Fénix from the town of Perito Moreno to the Río Deseado. The upper course is now referred to in maps as Rio Grande Fénix. The remaining short distance from the town to the Lago Buenos Aires is called Fénix Río Chico. By this measure, Argentina reached a division of the lake and the profit of several square kilometers on the northeast side of the lake. The Río Grande Fénix, Río Fénix Chico, Río Deseado system provides an artificial Flussbifurkation is: Río Chico Fénix flows over Lago Buenos Aires / General Carrera lake / river Baker to the Pacific, Río Deseado flows after 615 km in the Atlantic. On his way to the southeast of the river for irrigation is used. Tributaries are inter alia the Río Pinturas.

The river runs underground in parts, but comes before the coastal town of Puerto Deseado back to the surface, in order to form a natural sea port.
