Desierto de los Leones National Park

The National Park Desierto de los Leones (Spanish: Parque Nacional Desierto de los Leones ), short Desierto de los Leones ( "Lion Desert ") is a national park in Distrito Federal de México ( capital district or federal district) in Mexico. The park is 1866 hectares in size and is located about 20 km southwest of the historic center of Mexico City on the road to Toluca at about 3000 m above sea level in the field of city districts ( delegaciones ) Cuajimalpa de Morelos and Álvaro Obregón.

History

The area was declared by President Venustiano Carranza to the national park in 1917. It is the first area in Mexico, which has been provided with this status. 1876 ​​a nature reserve was there to protect occurring in the park sources which supplied Mexico City with water, been established.

Located in the park is a former Carmelite monastery, the Ex Convento del Carmen, which in the year 1606 by the architect Andrés de Segura ( 1577-1652 ), better known by his religious name of Fray Andrés de San Miguel, was built and is still largely preserved. The park with the monastery, which is an example of colonial architecture, is both an attraction for tourists and destination residents of the capital.

Flora and Fauna

A predominantly consisting of pine and fir forest of the park can be found as the most important types of the Sacred Fir ( Abies religiosa) and Pinus hartwegii. In the area there are over 100 registered species a wide variety of fungi. On animals live there including the gray fox ( Urocyon cinereoargenteus ), the white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus), the Nordopossum ( Didelphis virginiana), the Florida Cottontail ( Sylvilagus floridanus ), the Mexican cottontail rabbits ( Sylvilagus cunicularius ), the raccoon (Procyon lotor ) and the coyote (Canis latrans ).
