Devecser

Devecser [ dɛvɛtʃɛr ] ( German rarely Dewetscher ) is a town in Veszprém county in Hungary.

Geography

Devecser located in Transdanubia, about 35 km north of Lake Balaton northwest of the Bakony. In the north- west of the town is the characteristically shaped volcanic mountain Somló, a well-known Hungarian wine -growing region.

History

In the vicinity of the present town of Devecser there was in the Middle Ages at least five small villages: Devecser, Kisdevecser, Szék, Meggyes, and Patony. They were in the 12-13. Cent owned by families who came from the aristocratic ancestors Pecz. The area was the King ( Kun) László IV ( certificate: July 22, 1274) given to the son of Devecseri Eymich, Devecseri Márton, and named as the family and village name ( Devecser ). 1470-1490 a lock of Devecseri Csóron Márton was built, enlarged and remodeled. 1488 was Devecser a center of the whole region. On June 4, 1508, a brawl between Devecseri Csóron András and from the Archdiocese of Esztergom upcoming church people broke out, after which Bakócz Tamás reigned for 13 years over the territory whose people have been beat up from Esztergom. 1532 reported Devecseri Csóron András that the Turks of Werbőczy Imre have been seven times repulsed when they came against Sümeg and Devecser.

After the Turks, the castle of Devecser was strengthened and enlarged. 1584 died Devecseri Csóron András, then died out with him the male branch of the family Devecser. His daughter and his son- Nádasdy Kálmán inherited the fortune. 1625, the government of the whole area was taken over by Count Esterházy Miklós I.. He thought of the female branch of the family Devecser, and in 1626 he gave you the castle Somló.

The Castle of Devecser is also called Esterházy Palace.

September 5, 1882 to January 20, 1884 stayed the then assistant teacher Géza Gárdonyi, a well-known Hungarian writer, in Devecser. There he wrote his first known works. In memory of him, the school of Devecser is named after him.

On 4 October 2010 also Devecser was flooded as part of a 40 square kilometer area of approximately 700,000 cubic meters of red mud, which was leaked after the Kolontár - dam failure. At least eight people were killed and more than 100 were injured.

Traffic

Devecser is a transport hub. Here cross the main road 8 ( Szentgotthárd - Székesfehérvár ) and the road Győr- Papa - Tapolca. A minor road leads to Ajka. In addition Devecser has a train station through which the electrified railway line Celldömölk -Budapest leads.

People with relationship to the city

  • Géza Gárdonyi (1863-1922), Hungarian writer, worked on 5 September 1882 to January 20, 1884 as an assistant teacher in Devecser, and there wrote his first known works. In memory of him, the school of Devecser is named after him.
