Devgarh (Rajasthan)

Devgarh (or Deogarh ) is a town in the district of Rajsamand in the Indian state of Rajasthan.

Devgarh has about 16,500 inhabitants. The city is located 140 km north of Udaipur to 638 m asl It is surrounded by mountains of Aravalligebirges and numerous lakes.

In the history of Rajasthan Devgarh was one of the 16 fiefs ( thikana ), which awarded the Maharana of Mewar. The fort and the palace of Devgarh were built in 1670 by Rawat Dwarka Dasji and have since residence of this family. Today, the palace is owned by Rawat Nahar Singh, who has restored it as a hotel.

The rulers of Devgarh politically and culturally had a fairly large degree of independence. Jaswant Singh Rawat Among the (reigned 1734-1776 ), Ragho The (reigned 1776-1786 ) and Gokul Das ( r. 1786-1821 ) worked the two painters Bagta ( active ca 1761-1814 ) and Chokha (fl. 1799 - after 1826 ) in Devgarh. During this time Devgarh became one of the most important centers of painting in Rajasthan.
