Dexter is a city in Chaves County in the U.S. state of New Mexico in the United States with 1235 inhabitants ( 2000).

Geography

The city is located about 20 km southeast of Roswell in the south of the county, in the central southeastern New Mexico and has a total area of 2.1 km ², of which 0.2 km ² water surface.

Demographic data

According to the census of 2000, there were 1,235 people in 390 households, and 333 families. The population density was 588 inhabitants per km ². The racial the population was composed of 60.00 % White, 0.24 % African American, 0.73 % Native American, 35.47 % from other ethnic groups.

Of the 390 households out of which 47.90 % have children under the age of 18 living with them. 62.30 % were married couples living together, 17.70 % had a female householder with no husband, and 14.60% were non-families, 11.50 % of all households are made up and in 4.90% had someone living alone at the age of 65 years or older. The average household size was 3.17 and the average family size was 3.39 persons.

In relation to the entire town the population was spread out with 35.30 % under the age of 18, 9.90 % from 18 to 24, 27.40% from 25 to 44 years, 17.10% between 45 and 64 years and 10.30% were 65 years old or older. The average age was 30 years. For every 100 females there were 94.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 86.7 men statistically.

The median income for a household was $ 30,707, and the median income for a family was $ 31,316. Males have a median income of $ 23,950, women $ 16,591. The per capita income was $ 10,239. 14.80% of families and 14.90% of the population were below the poverty line.
