Dibutyltin oxide or Dibutyloxostannan is an organotin compound, which is used in organic synthesis. Besides many other applications, it is particularly useful in the regioselective alkylation, acylation and sulphonation, even if the starting material contains alcohol groups.
Structure
Dialkyl tin oxides R 2 SnO are hydrolysis products of the corresponding dialkyltin halides. The formed during the hydrolysis oxides are amorphous solids whose exact structure is unknown. Because of the high decomposition temperature and low solubility of a polymeric structure is suspected. This assumption was confirmed by IR and NMR experiments.
Applications
Dibutyltin oxide ( DBTO of English dibutyltin oxide) can be used in the regioselective tosylation be used ( a specific type of sulfonation ) of certain polyols to tosylating selective primary alcohols and alcohols exocyclic on sterically hindered alcohols:
Further, dibutyl tin oxide as an alternative to, tin ( II) 2-ethylhexanoate used in the polymerization of polylactones.
