The foam grasshopper ( Dictyophorus spumans ) is a kind of cone head horror ( Pyrgomorphidae ) within the Grasshopper ( caelifera ). The name derives from the property of the insects secrete a foamy secretion to ward off enemies.

Features

With a body length of 64 millimeters, the foam grasshopper is one of the larger species of the family of cone-head horror. Body and legs are strikingly reddish, orange and drawn in black, the abdomen is black and wearing white rings. The bright colors are used to ward off enemies.

The foam grasshopper is incapable of flight, the rear pair of wings is completely regressed.

Distribution and habitat

The animals are found throughout South Africa to the Natal region. As habitats are open, rocky habitats and areas with low vegetation. Foam grasshoppers are often found on mountain tops.
