With libretto by Caspar Neher motifs from Johann Gottfried Herder's parable The African verdict Weill's opera was premiered on March 10, 1932 at the Municipal Opera in Berlin. Shortly after it was banned by the Nazis and, unlike, for example, the Threepenny Opera, no longer listed for a long time after the Second World War. She was Weill's first opera after the break with Bertolt Brecht.
