Diego García de Paredes (1506–1563)

Diego García de Paredes (* 1506 in Trujillo, Spain, † in Venezuela 1563) was a Spanish conquistador.

Life

Diego was the son of Colonel Diego García de Paredes (1466-1534) and Doña Mencia de Vargas born. By the age of 18 he lived in Seville. As a young man he entered, according to his father's example, in the military service a. In 1524 he went with his friend Francisco de Lizaur to India, after which he was in Nicaragua and in 1527 in Panama, where he joined the army of his cousin Francisco Pizarro joined who had his residence in Panama City to reach 1530 to Peru.

He participated with his cousin Francisco in the conquest of the Inca empire, and was instrumental in the 1532 Battle of Cajamarca. In 1545 he took part in an expedition in the Amazon region, led by Francisco de Orellana. García de Paredes was one of the survivors wounded and returned in 1546 to Isla Margarita back.

Later he was involved in the founding of several cities in Venezuela, such as: Barquisimeto and Trujillo. In 1561 he participated in the suppression of the rebellion. In 1563 he was near Borburata far from Puerto Cabello, on the beach of Capo Blanco killed by Indians after they had invited him and his companions to a banquet. He was on the trip, to take up his new post as governor of Popayán, Colombia.
