Dieter Engels

Dieter Engels ( born February 7, 1950 in Mechernich ) is a German lawyer and since 2002 president of the Federal Court.

Life

Dieter Engels is the son of an official. After visiting the Beethoven -Gymnasium in Bonn, he studied from 1968 to 1973 Law at the Rheinische Friedrich- Wilhelms- University, where he earned his doctorate at the clerkship in 1979 at the port.

In 1983, he joined the Scientific Services of the German Bundestag and could collect as managing director of the Secretariat of the Committee of Inquiry on the affair of the New home first experience in the investigation of embezzled and wasted resources. In 1989 he was appointed Secretary of the Budget Committee of the Bundestag. In the years between 1992 and 1996, he worked as managing director of the SPD parliamentary group.

In 1996, Engels end to the Federal Court and worked as its vice-president, before he was elected as the successor of Hedda von Wedel as president in May 2002. In this position, he gained a reputation as an incorruptible jurist and independent spirit which informs the public and the tax money wastage of government members of his own party and criticized accordingly. So he denounced in his first year in office to the glamorized job placement statistics of the Nuremberg-based Federal Labour Office.

He is an honorary professor at the University of Administrative Sciences in Speyer. Dieter Engels is divorced and has two children.

Since 2010 he is member of the University Council of the University of Bayreuth. In 2013 he was elected Chairman of the University Council of the University of Bonn.
