Dieter Mahncke

Dieter Mahncke (* 1941 in Namibia ) is a German political scientist. He is Emeritus Professor at the College of Europe in Bruges and Warsaw ( the Alfried Krupp von Bohlen and Halbach Chair for European foreign and security policy ), and author of numerous books and essays on German foreign policy, disarmament, European security, to the German -American relations and to South Africa.

Mahncke was born as the son of German parents in Namibia and grew up there. At first he studied at the University of Cape Town, but then moved to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he graduated in 1962 with a bachelor's degree in political science. At the Johns Hopkins University in 1964, he earned the Master's degree, he was awarded a doctorate in 1968. From 1969 to 1974 he was a research associate at the Research Institute of the German Society for Foreign Policy. In 1974 he completed his habilitation at the University of Bonn. He was a lecturer at the University of Mainz from 1969 to 1972 and at the University of Bonn ( 1973-74 ), Professor of Political Science at the University of the Federal Armed Forces in Munich (1973 ) and Hamburg ( 1975-1980 ). From 1977 to 1978 he was vice president there.

Dieter Mahncke was head of the speech writer Staff of the Federal President from 1980 to 1985, then deputy director of policy planning in the Ministry of Defence until 1996. Subsequently he taught until his retirement in 2010 as Professor of European Foreign and Security Policy at the College of Europe. By 2008, he headed the Department of Political and Administrative Sciences; 2006-2010 he was there founding director of the Department of EU International Relations and Diplomacy Studies. He was a visiting professor in Halle, Antwerp, Sofia, Bangkok and the United States ( Dartmouth, Duke, Middlebury, University of North Carolina).
