Dieter Nohlen

Dieter Nohlen ( born November 6, 1939 in Oberhausen ) is a German political scientist who has done research, especially on issues of comparative governance teaching and to economic, social and political problems of the "Third World". He was able to provide numerous, internationally influential publications on elections and electoral systems. In Germany he is known to a broad public policy by some multi-volume encyclopedias and handbooks. Several of his writings have been translated into several languages. Nohlen also published in English and Spanish, especially in Latin American countries.

Life and work

Dieter Nohlen is the youngest of three sons of the merchant and his wife Wilhelmine Otto Nohlen, born Brahm. He received his high school diploma in modern languages ​​at the Municipal Gymnasium in Oberhausen- Sterkrade in 1960.

Then Nohlen studied Political Science, History and Romance Studies at the Universities of Cologne, Montpellier and Heidelberg. Nohlen his doctorate in 1967 with Dolf Sternberger and Werner Conze with the work " monarchical parliamentary and parliamentary government in Spain in the 19th century."

After years of research and teaching at the University of Heidelberg he went as a representative of the Konrad Adenauer Foundation from 1970 to 1973 to Chile, where she taught, among other things at the Facultad de Ciencias Sociales Latinoamericana ( FLACSO ). At the University of Tübingen, he habilitated in 1973 with the publication " Chile - The socialist experiment." Reviewers of the work was Klaus Beyme. Since 1974 Nohlen was Professor of Political Science at the University of Heidelberg. To Tübingen, which reached him in 1989, he refused. Since 2005 he has retired. Since then he has held a number of visiting professorships in Spain and Latin America.

Nohlen is married to Andrea Ebbecke - Nohlen and has four children.
