The company in 1972 by Ronald Stordahl, with the name derived from one of his own design kit for radio amateurs, the "digital electronic keyer kit" was founded.

After Mark Larson in 1976 came as a Managing Director, he structured Digi -Key from a provider for hobby electronics towards the general distributor.
