Dimedone is used in the organic analysis for the identification and separation of the aldehydes ( formaldehyde, inter alia ). It forms white crystals.
Representation
The presentation is achieved by deprotonation of diethyl malonate in a sodium ethoxide solution. In slight deficiency are employed to mesityl oxide. After prolonged heating is neutralized, the dimedone separates out as an oil or even crystalline.
Properties
Dimedone is in solution in a tautomeric equilibrium - in a 2:1 ratio of Keto-/Enol-Form in chloroform.
