Dimethyl phthalate (DMP ) is a phthalic acid and phthalic acid from methanol and thus belongs alongside phthalate, di -iso- nonyl phthalate, diethyl phthalate and dibutyl phthalate to the group of phthalates.

Representation and extraction

The technical production of dimethyl phthalate is performed in a two-step synthesis of phthalic anhydride and methanol. The first step is a rapid alcoholysis to Phthalsäurehalbester. The second esterification proceeds as an equilibrium reaction and requires the use of slower, and acid catalysts for conversion completion, the distillative removal of the water formed.

Properties

Dimethyl phthalate is a light-sensitive, colorless, low volatility, higher viscosity (dynamic viscosity of 1.7 mPa · s at 20 ° C. ) and almost odorless liquid which is sparingly soluble in water. It decomposes in the heat, with carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide, and irritating vapors and gases.

Use

DMP will use as a plasticizer, as a repellent against insects, and it is particularly effective against Anopheles, and as a solvent in glow sticks ( " glow stick ").
