Dimitar Penev

Dimitar Penev ( Bulgarian Димитър Пенев; born July 12, 1945 in Mirowjane, near Sofia) is a Bulgarian football coach and former player.

Player

Penev played from 1959 to 1964 to Lokomotiv Sofia, before he left in the direction of CSKA Sofia after winning his first Bulgarian Cup. There, the sweeper played 13 years and had its most successful period. A total of seven national championships and five Soviet Army he could win trophies with his team. He came in 364 league games for use, in which he scored 25 goals.

For the Bulgarian national Penev ran 90 times (two goals), 20 times as captain. With it, he failed to qualify for three consecutive world championships. However, both in 1966 as well as 1970 and 1974 was not the team of the first round also.

1967 and 1971 Penev was awarded in Bulgaria as a footballer of the year.

Coach

In 1984, Penev his first coaching job. After unsuccessful years as in Kuwait 1986, he was coach of CSKA Sofia. With players such as Christo Stoichkov, Trifon Ivanov, Emil Kostadinov and Penev Ljuboslaw his nephew, he won three championships, national cups and trophies Soviet Army.

1991 Penev was the successor of Ivan Vutsow coach of Bulgarian national football team, which he had overseen in 1989 for a game as interim coach, he led the team in 1994 but still the World Cup in the USA where Bulgaria could obtain surprising fourth place. Two years later, the national team qualified for the first time for a European Championship. After switching off in the first round gave Penev as coach his former assistants Christo Bonew.

1998 Penev worked a second time as a coach at CSKA Sofia. Although he won in 1999, however the national cup competition, but was later released again half a year.

Following the resignation of Christo Stoichkov took over the 62 -year-old Penev 2007 one more time the Bulgarian selection, but was again removed in 2008 after narrowly missing out on qualification for the European Championship by Plamen Markov.

Penev, who was active in his coaching career at Spartak Varna and also in Saudi Arabia, was awarded because of its success as Bulgaria coach of the 20th century. He is also a carrier of the order " Stara Planina " ( 1st class) and an honorary citizen of the city of Sofia.
