Dimitri Uznadze

Dimitri Uznadze (Georgian დიმიტრი უზნაძე; born December 2, 1886 in Sakara, Zestaponi district, Imereti, † October 9, 1950 in Tbilisi ) was a Georgian psychologist. He was a professor and co-founder of the Tbilisi State University and Georgian Academy of Sciences.

He came from a Georgian noble family. In 1904, he put on the Georgian school in Kutaisi, the Abitur. In 1909 he completed his studies at the Philosophical Faculty of the University of Leipzig. In the same year he received his doctorate at the University of Halle- Wittenberg in Halle ( Saale) about the epistemology Vladimir S. Solovyov.

From 1910 to 1917 taught Uznadze world history at the high school in Kutaisi. In 1918 he was co-founder of the Tbilisi State University. From 1918 to 1950 he was a professor and dean of the Faculty of Psychology, University of Tbilisi. In 1941 he was co-founder of the Georgian Academy of Sciences and was until 1950 the first director of the later named after him, the Institute of Psychology.

Uznadze mainly dealt with philosophy, history of philosophy, psychology of language, education, theory and experimental pedagogy, formulated the theory of unconscious mental health settings. His scientific work he wrote in German and Russian. Largely because of his early contributions to the psychology of language and the setting or set- theory, he is considered the greatest Georgian representatives of Gestalt theory.
