Dimitrija Demeter

Dimitrija Demeter ( born July 21, 1811 in Zagreb, † June 24, 1872 ) was a poet and writer.

Demeter came from a Greek family and studied medicine in Vienna and Padua. He gave this profession but, stepped into the civil service and became editor of the Journal Národne novine. Later he edited the magazine Danica. His prime DN Demeter gained through his dramas Ljubav i duznost ( love and duty ) and Krvna osveta ( Blood vengeance ) and the tragedy Teuta. He also wrote the lyric- epic poem Grobničko Polje, several short stories and started as a translator, notably of many dramatic works, deserves. His stage plays appeared collected in two volumes ( 1838-1844 ).

He died in Zagreb, where he had retired in 1861 as a retired Statthaltereisekretär. He was buried at the Mirogoj Cemetery in Zagreb.
