Dinostratus

Dinostratus (Greek Δεινόστρατος, * ca 390 BC; † ca 320 BC) was a Greek mathematician and geometer and brother of Menaechmus. It is thus known that he developed the quadratrix of Hippias to solve the problem of squaring the circle ( set of Dino Stratos ).

He is also quoted Dino Stratos or in Latinized form Dino Stratus.

Life and work

Dinostratus ' main contribution to mathematics was his solution of the quadrature of the circle. To solve this problem, Dinostratus used the Trisektrix of Hippias of Elis, which later - after Dinostratus had solved the issue - it was known as quadratrix. Although Dinostratus solved this problem, he used this not only ruler and compass, and therefore it was clear to the Greeks, that its solution had violated the fundamental principles of their mathematics. Over 2000 years later, should be proved that the quadrature of the circle is impossible when using only ruler and compass.
