Diocese of Leoben

The Diocese of Leoben was an Austrian diocese, whose territory extended over parts of Upper Styria and in 1859 united with the diocese of Graz- Seckau.

History

The diocese was separated at the request of Emperor Joseph II of the Archdiocese of Salzburg. On March 17, 1786, Pope Pius VI approved. to the establishment. The first and only Bishop Alexander Franz Joseph Graf von Engel ( born February 13, in 1722 in Füssen) resided in Göss monastery at Leoben, where a cathedral chapter was established.

The diocesan territory included the districts of Bruck an der Mur and Jews castle and the area around Aussee. It consisted of 157 parishes.

After the death of Bishop Angel on February 22, 1800, the diocese was then administered by the bishops of the Diocese of Graz -Seckau by the chapter and until 1808.

Already on 13 July 1804, the Association of the diocese with the Diocese of Graz- Seckau was ordered by Emperor Francis II. The actual union of the two dioceses was made by the late approval of the Pope until September 1, 1859.
