Diocese of Viborg

The diocese of Viborg (Danish: Viborg pin ) is a diocese of the Evangelical Lutheran Danish People's Church.

The diocese includes part of the northern half of the Danish mainland ( Jutland ). Karsten Nissen since 1996 Bishop of Viborg. Episcopal church is the Cathedral of Viborg.

History

The diocese of Viborg was founded about 1065 by division of the diocese of Ribe. The first stone cathedral was built in 1125 to around 1200. The Sepulchre of 1188 canonized provost Kjeld was an important place of pilgrimage in the Middle Ages. During the Reformation Viborg was one of the centers, spread from which the new doctrine of Luther in the country. Hans thousands could already in 1525 preaching evangelical and very soon spread through a printing press his writings under the protection of the citizenry. 1536, King Christian III. the last Roman Catholic Bishop Jørgen Friis in jail. 1537 with the introduction of Jacob Schøning as superintendent ( later the superintendent took the title of bishop again ) by Johannes Bugenhagen the conversion in a Protestant bishopric completed.
