Diospyros blancoi ( Mabolo )

Mabolo ( Diospyros blancoi, syn. Diospyros discolor Willd. ) Is a tropical crop which belongs to the ebony plants.

Features

Diospyros blancoi reaches stature heights of up to 33 meters, the trunk up to 80 cm in diameter. The species is slow growing and always wears green, opposite leaves that are silvery hairy on top of leathery, dark green and smooth on the bottom.

Origin and Distribution

Mabolo is from the Philippines and is cultivated there often. As the crop species is widespread throughout the tropics, but nowhere except in Southeast Asia often.

Use

The shell of Mabolo berry carries an unpleasant taste, which can be reduced in that the berry is kept for several hours in the refrigerator before eating. The fruit can be used as an edible raw fruits, canned in fruit salads or in syrup; in the latter, but the flesh is fibrous and tough. The berry is considered to be a good iron, calcium and vitamin B source.
