Dipogon bifasciatus

Dipogon bifasciatus is a Hymenoptera of the family of Wegwespen ( Pompilidae ).

Features

The animals reach a body length of 5-9 millimeters (females ) or 4 to 7 millimeters (male). The third antennal segment of the female is considerably longer than the scape and the Discoidalzelle 1 has not clouded tip. In the male, the antennal segments are parallel to each other under hand and not bulged. The species is the other species of the genus Dipogon, such as the Pied spider wasp, very similar and can be in the field of these little discriminating.

Occurrence

The species occurs from central, northern and eastern Europe to the Far East ( Japan). The southern limit of distribution in Europe in Upper Italy and Bulgaria. In the Alps it is found only in deep layers.

It settles temperature favored forest edges, thickets and open habitats with woody debris as open vineyards and orchards, too, is to be found directly in the urban areas into gardens. The animals fly in two generations from mid-May to mid-September.

Way of life

Females of Dipogon bifasciatus build their nests in hollow stems, Käferbohrlöchern in dead wood and wall cracks. You prefer a passage diameter of 3.5 to four millimeters. The species is one of the few of her family, which invests up to six cells in series. The partition walls are made of different materials such as vegetable fibers, wood flour or insect parts and three to eleven millimeters thick. They are covered with cobwebs. Used the female bristles on the head base. The nest is finally closed up to six inches thick, with next to last cobwebs even larger parts and resin can be stored. The brood is supplied, each with a crab spider, at the abdomen an egg is laid. In cells with females larger spiders are introduced. Pupation takes place in a cigar-shaped, white cocoon that contains at one end of the feces. The development from egg to hatching takes about 30 days.
