Disocactus flagelliformis

Disocactus is a genus in the cactus family ( Cactaceae ). The botanical name is derived from the Greek words " δίς " (dis) for twice and " ίσος " ( isos ) for the same from. He refers to the leaf-like flattened (two - equilateral ) drives.

Description

The species of the genus Disocactus growing epiphytic or lithophytic and are shrubby. The shoots are ribbed or flattened and leaf-like. The near the base rotating round main stem is flattened only at the top, while the side shoots are completely flattened. The present thereon are bristly spines or missing.

The large, at the opening day flowers appear singly or rarely more of an areola. They are of different shape and size. The flowers are funnel-shaped or tubular, sometimes zygomorphic and rarely wheel-shaped. They are bright red, pink, orange, light yellow or white. The stamens are often in two rows, the upper sometimes form a distinct throat circle.

There are berry-like fruits formed, covered almost glabrous or with a few small scales. They contain broadly ovate seeds 1.5 to 2.4 mm in length and 1 to 1.7 millimeters wide. The seeds are black brown to almost black and shiny or rarely somewhat dull.

Systematics and distribution

The genus Disocactus is distributed mainly in Central America, but also in Mexico, the Caribbean and northern South America.

The first description was published in 1845 by John Lindley. The type species of the genus Cereus biformis. Wilhelm Barthlott divided the genus in 1991 Disocactus in five subgenera. Belong to the genus of the following types:
