Distinguished Service Medal (US Coast Guard)

The Coast Guard Distinguished Service Medal is a prestigious award of the United States for personal services in the United States Coast Guard ( Coast Guard ) and was founded on August 4, 1949. Until that time, the members of the United States Coast Guard were entitled to receive Navy Distinguished Service Medal. The Homeland Security Distinguished Service Medal, which has the Transportation Distinguished Service Medal replaced in 2002, is another award, may receive the members of the United States Coast Guard.

This award is settled in the Pyramid of Honor as the Distinguished Service Medal of the Ministry of Defense of the United States (Defense Distinguished Service Medal ), and the individual branches of the armed forces ( Navy, Army, Air Force and Homeland Security ), but under the Merit Cross (Coast Guard Cross, Distinguished Service Cross, Navy Cross and Air Force Cross).

One level below the Coast Guard Distinguished Service Medal ranked the Silver Star.
