Distributed File System (Microsoft)

The Distributed File System (DFS, English for Distributed File System ) from Microsoft enables the computer network distributed directories to directory structures together. The directories can be located on different datastores and yet appear users as a closed structure.

The concept of the Distributed File System is not from Microsoft. There are different implementations from different manufacturers.

Under Windows NT 4.0 Server DFS could be installed for the first time. It is partially restricted variants part of the following Windows Server for business.

The topology of the DFS includes a directory as a DFS root and links to the destination directories. The target directory replicas can be created with which the contained files are automatically synchronized. But then it is not possible to control whether users can access the actual target directory, or may not yet current replica.

It can optionally two variants of a DFS root will be created:

  • Standalone DFS root Can not have DFS shared folders have root-level
  • Can only have one level of DFS links have
  • Can describe DFS shared folders have root-level
  • Can multiple levels of DFS links have
  • Must be installed on a member server of the domain
  • It is automatically published in Active Directory
