Docear

Docear is a free reference management software for finding, managing, and creating scientific literature. Docear is released under the GNU General Public License. The application is written in Java and is available for both Microsoft Windows, Linux and Mac OS X.

Special

The developers emphasize on their website three special features of Docear.

1 Docear has a " single- section " User Interface. This is the sort of PDF files and notes in categories allow more effective than with traditional user interfaces, which consist of three parts ( one for categories, one for document list and one for the notes ). The developers point out that it was possible with its concept to sort individual notes in any categories, while in other programs usually only entire documents (including notes ) could be sorted. Also notes of PDFs could be sorted into separate categories. Create user notes the way, not directly with Docear but with any PDF reader such as Adobe Reader or PDF -XChange Viewer. The respective notes imported and synchronized Docear.

2 Mind- maps. Docear makes it possible to design scientific papers. The existing PDFs and notes can be copied to Docear directly into the designs inside. As referring to sources falling easier than when an external software is used. An export the design to Microsoft Word or OpenOffice is possible. At least for Microsoft Word there is an add-on, Docear4Word, which enables the automatic creation and formatting of references and almost any citation styles (APA, Harvard, ACM, ... ).

3 Docear offers a referral service for scientific literature. This should free downloadable scientific works Docears Digital library with 2 million articles.

History

Docear emerged from the Program SciPlore Mind Mapping. SciPlore Mind mapping was developed between 2009 and 2011 by Beel and Bela Gipp Jöran as part of their doctoral theses. Since 2011 Jöran Beel developed together with Stefan Langer and Marcel Genzmehr Docear, and SciPlore Mind Mapping was not developed any further. The basic concept of the two tools is the same. However, ( e) SciPlore Mind Mapping is based on the mind mapping software FreeMind while Docear based on Freeplane. In addition, the reference management software JabRef is built right into Docear. In addition to these people, there are some other parties and Docear is supported by the Otto -von- Guericke University and the University of California, Berkeley.
