FreeMind

FreeMind is a computer program for visualizing and structuring of content ( concepts, ideas, subject matter, meeting results, etc.). This method of knowledge representation is called business mapping, the resulting documents are called mind maps. Mind maps are, for example, as a tool for project management sense, assist in the structuring of learning content or the summary of the results of a brainstorming session.

Properties

The Freemind program was developed in the Java programming language for Windows, Mac and Linux. To run the Java Runtime Environment version 1.5 or higher is required.

The XML-based data format ( file extension *. Mm ) allows you to write your own conversion routines using XSLT.

The functionality of the tool is based on the core tasks of Mind Mapping. The available commercial solutions extend the mind mapping functionality often to establish cooperative aspects and centrally MindMap information databases managed in the corporate environment, which FreeMind not guaranteed.

The beta versions of the 0.9.0 series have among other things, advanced export functions, the creation of PDF documents or SVG graphics is possible for example. In addition, they offer the use of filters and attributes, as well as encryption of individual branches. A calendar function with resubmission is integrated.

Forks

Currently, there is only one active fork of FreeMind, Freeplane, and this is particularly geared towards ease of use. The Fork SciPlore Mind Mapping has now been discontinued in favor of the successor project Docear, which also provides bibliographic management for the academic requirements, but Freeplane instead of FreeMind used as a base.
