Dodola

Dodola (including Doda, Dudulya and Didilya ) Perperuna or Preperuša is an old Slavic tradition.

According to some interpretations, it is at Dodola a Slavic goddess of rain, and wife of the Upper God Perun ( thunder god). The Slavs believed that it rains when Dodol their celestial cows ( the clouds ) milks. Every spring, they say, flies Dodola over forests and meadows to spread spring green and decorate the trees with flowers.

The name Dodola may possibly be associated with the Lithuanian word for thunder ( dundulis ). Likewise, the name of Perun with the Baltic weather god Pērkons. There might also be a connection to the Greek oracle Dodona, was unusually worshiped in the Zeus as a weather god.

Ritual

Croatian, Bulgarian and Serbian Slavs organized the Dodole or Perperuna.Fest in times of drought, in which they worshiped the goddess and prayed for rain. During the ritual, young women sang some songs for Dodola, coupled with a dance for which they were dressed in leaves and branches. Nowadays this ritual is still practiced by Folkoregruppen.

In the tradition of Turopolje be selected on Jurjevo - day the five most beautiful girls to represent Dodola - goddesses in leaves clothes and sing songs for the village until the end of the holiday.

There may be a connection with the Sorbian tradition of Easter songs, such as those occur in Krabat history.
