Dog River (Ontario)

BW

The Dog River (English for "Dog River " ) is a river in Thunder Bay District, Ontario, Canada.

The 90 km long river has its source in a lake area south of the Armistice Lake. From there it flows south, then in a south-easterly direction. The Dog River flows around the lying in its catchment area Muskeg Lake in a big bow. The East Dog River flows from the left in the river. Finally, it flows in a southeasterly direction to Dog Lake, its estuary is located on the northwest shore. The Dog River thus constitutes a source of the river Kaministiquia River. This drains the Dog Lake towards the Lake Superior.

The name of the Dog River is derived from a legend of the Ojibway Indians. A dog should have this timely warning of an impending attack by the Cree. In honor of the dog's portrait was carved in stone in the hills between the Dog Lake and the Little Dog Lake.
